Nominations for the American Marshall Memorial Fellowship (AMMF) are being accepted until June 4. The Southern California Leadership Network is the official partner in Southern California for AMMF, which is coordinated by the German Marshall Fund of the United States. AMMF educates emerging American and European leaders on the importance of transatlantic relationships and encourages them to collaborate on a range of international and domestic policy challenges. Fellows spend 24 days traveling to five cities across Europe, learning about the institutions and people that drive Europe's cities, regions, countries, and multilateral systems through meetings with local counterparts. ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT |
You are a graduate of Leadership L.A and also an American Marshall Memorial Fellow. Can you tell us how these experiences have helped you in your career and what advice can you offer candidates that are applying this year to our leadership programs and the American Marshall Memorial Fellowship?

The varied curriculum and site visits to the area’s leading institutions provided me with unique insights and a greater appreciation for the complex issues facing our City and County. My first visit to Europe during the Spring 2011 American Marshall Memorial Fellowship was truly a trip of a lifetime. Meetings with elected officials, policy makers, business leaders and NGOs during my travels to Brussels, Freiburg, Athens, Tirana and Bucharest were amazing and have provided a context to better analyze American-European cultural, economic and diplomatic relations. But most important were the relationships that I have been able to cultivate through both programs. Many of my class colleagues are now transitioning into leadership roles.
Our shared experiences and my access to their wisdom and insights will continue to provide benefits well into the future. Without question, Leadership LA and the AMMF have been instrumental in my professional growth.
David Roberts, Associate Director, Local Government Relations, University of Southern California, (LLA '99, AMMF '10)

Leadership Southern California learns about state government in Sacramento
Leadership Southern California and alumni traveled to Sacramento on May 22-23 to learn more about state government and leadership at the state level. They met with Dr. Rich Callahan, USF to discuss leadership practices and challenges. "Powerful leadership is driven by powerful inquiry from leaders," said Dr. Callahan. Fellows also had the opportunity to dialogue about moving California forward with Assemblymember Ricardo Lara (LLA '07). "As a state we need to invest in our education system to develop our workforce and remain competitive. Our economy depends on it," said Assemblymember Lara. The Fellows then joined the L.A. Area Chamber's 100-member delegation of Los Angeles civic leaders at advocacy meetings and briefings with top lawmakers, including Governor Jerry Brown, Senator Pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg, State Controller John Chiang and State Treasurer Bill Lockyer. Leadership L.A. tackles the state of education
Last Friday, Leadership L.A. focused on the state of education and heard from leaders who are spearheading change in this sector. Panelists included Deputy Mayor of Education, Joan Sullivan, Dean Michael Spagna, California State University, Northridge, and Director Kim Pattillo-Brownson, Advancement Project. “I want to live in a society that is able to retire, that can lead an able workforce”, said Pattillo-Brownson. “In order to make that work, we need an educated workforce to make it fair for the next generation.” Fellows had a chance to explore different educational models within Los Angeles by visiting the Children’s Bureau, Miguel Contreras Learning Complex, and Alliance Merkin Middle School and Gertz-Ressler High School.Read more about the day on Twitter. Leadership Southern California focuses on the region's economy and workforce development
Earlier this month , Leadership Southern California had the opportunity to tour the Port of Los Angeles as part of their economic and workforce development seminar. The group dialogued about the various challenges Southern California’s economy is facing. Key themes included trade infrastructure and the workforce development and challenges of key industries, such as tourism, energy, and shipping. “One of the challenges we are facing is the competitive landscape”, said Deputy Executive Director Cynthia Ruiz, Port of Los Angeles. “The Panama Canal will be widening and will accommodate bigger ships.” Although the Port of Los Angeles is America’s number one port container and the global model for sustainability, this will ultimately affect the overall trade route in the Western Hemisphere.
